CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Yugo
Age: ~14
Canon: Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc V
Canon Point: End of episode 140.
Character Information: Yugo’s Yu-Gi-Oh! Wiki.
The terminology and names used in this Wiki revolve around the English dub of Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc V, while the following application will be using terms and names according to the Japanese dub with loose associations towards the English dub’s puns. The Wiki’s information regarding Arc V’s story and Yugo’s role within it remain the same, up until the end of episode 140.
The last that Yugo remembers is having merged with his dimensional counterparts and becoming Supreme King Zarc. Zarc had been destroying the combined dimensions and crushing every duelist that opposed him, only to be stopped by Reira Akaba. Zarc’s defeat leads to the dimensions splitting into four once more, as well as Zarc being sealed within Reira.
While this defeat brings peace to Yugo’s soul and spurs a wish to continue dueling without malice, it leaves several things unanswered for the boy: was his best friend, Rin, safe? Could the world come to accept a lifestyle where dueling could be used for the sake of smiles? Yugo strongly feels that both could come true -- yet as it stands, these questions might never find answers after all.
Personality:
Yugo is a dauntless boy who does not give up.
Few things seem to stop Yugo if he sets his mind to something. If there is an obstacle to overcome, he's already on his feet and giving hell to whatever lies in his way; if there is someone in opposition to him, he will try to mow them down, going as far as seeking them out to get what he wants. To him, matters of this nature are as simple as pursuing it until he comes out on top. Confident in his capabilities and even more prepared to show the world what he's made of, Yugo readily launches himself at matters with everything he has.
He has a short temper, especially when others confused his name for other terms. Several things are surefire ways of setting him off. For one, the word "fusion" in Japanese -- yūgō -- sounds very similar to his name and getting the two mixed up immediately enrages him; even mentioning the word could tip Yugo into the defensive. Similarly, asking, "you go where?" and making any puns his name -- slow-go, bin-go, and like terms -- is a definitive berserk button. And finally, he has no nerve towards those who hurt others and hardly needs to know the victims in question before he takes action himself. His typical response towards those who anger him involves shouting and aggressiveness, bringing out whatever he has on him to drive his point home, namely his deck and dueling.
Yugo's tenacity and tunnel vision towards overcoming challenges is a product of the dimension he lived most of his life. In a place that emphasized that winners took everything and losers had nothing, Yugo is fiercely competitive and exceptional at dueling, and he has pride in his capabilities.
His go-to strategy towards encounters is highly responsive to what he's met with, often taking advantage of opportunities as they rise and laying claim to openings as they are available. For instance, when a Duel Chaser took one of his monsters to attack him, Yugo responds near immediately with taking one of the opponent's monsters himself for a vicious counter-attack. In another, he fought a duel against a girl named Serena, who chose to stop using Action Cards after a point in their duel; Yugo does not hesitate to take the cards she ignored in order to seize victory. Matters that stick rigidly towards a set plan are not Yugo's style. If push came to shove, Yugo would even hinge his fate upon luck and chance, risking all that he has in the process.
The vicious nature of the Synchro Dimension makes Yugo accept most things of equally harsh circumstances. He is capable of talking about the brutal ways of matters honestly: from his living conditions, to the fate of those that fail to climb their way up in society, to even the seemingly impossible notion that there was a dimensional war upon his world’s horizon. One of the final notes that he made towards dueling before becoming Zarc was that “winning a victory without pain is impossible,” a notion that sticks close to the heart of Arc V while Yugo was defeated that duel. His acceptance of these matters is by no means compliance to them however; Yugo would not hesitate to answer aggression with aggression, especially if things become personal.
Yugo is highly skilled with motorcycle driving and management -- specifically for D-Wheels, motorcycle-like technology that was an extension of Duel Disks for Duel Monster duels -- treating both aspects with respect and passion. When he owned a D-Wheel, he was capable of performing high jumps and risky maneuvers, such as riding up natural ramps, riding down the sides of buildings, and leaping over security barricades. He used it to evade security and get the upper hand in riding duels. His D-Wheel was a source of pride for himself; he took great care of it, often repairing it and getting angry or panicked whenever harm came its way. He would even asks the D-Wheel if it was okay whenever it endured abuse, keeping it in good condition to the best of his ability all the while.
Yugo is far from an expert in social etiquette. His speech is rude and rough around the edges, and he addresses others with unprejudiced amounts of bluntness. He has little sense of personal space, often placing himself too close to others and taking liberties to grab an arm or shoulder to move people around or to demand answers. He even tried to interrogate two people he knocked out at one point. Such matters make him seem idiotic at worst, if not humorous from an outside perspective.
Yugo is matter-of-fact to the point of insensitivity, tending to act before he thinks and speaks. Even though his words and actions are relatively abrasive, his intentions are typically well-meaning -- and while stubborn to a fault, he knows when to take in new information and change his behavior. Yugo is aware of his shortcomings, and would apologize and own up to his actions whenever addressed sincerely.
To those he meets and befriends, Yugo is excitable, sweet and a bit goofy, making no secret out of his connection with others. He expresses his support for others unabashedly; he loudly cheers for his friends when they win, and he fights in their memory when they are no longer near him. He keeps his friends interests in mind even when he pulls off surprises; for instance, when Yuzu was determined to let the Synchro Dimension know about an unavoidable war with Academia, Yugo entered himself and Yuzu into the Friendship Cup to offer her a platform to voice that message with.
Yugo keeps relationships with his friends close to his heart, and he would do near anything for them. Yugo would set aside his ambitions if it meant that he would help somebody close to him, as he did not hesitate to drop his window to climb up society to save his best friend Rin. Even in the face of utterly defeating circumstances, Yugo would not stop until he can help those that matter to him most: not even getting soundly beaten to the point of getting his D-Wheel crushed by Rin kept Yugo down.
For a long time, Yugo harbored a dark secret that even he was not made aware of until it was too late: Yugo was once a part of a being known as Supreme King Zarc, a spiteful being that was set upon destroying the dimensions. When he dueled his counterparts Yuya, Yuto, or Yuri, Yugo’s dragon -- Clear Wing Synchro Dragon -- would call out to his counterparts’ dragons and drive the boys into a berserk state. While Yugo is typically an aggressive sort, he was especially malevolent in this state and was hellbent on tearing down those that opposed him while demanded he “became one” with his counterparts. With Zarc having been sealed within Reira Akaba, Yugo seems unable to reach this berserk state as of recent, and has come to welcome the prospect of dueling -- and living -- with peace in mind.
